Plain-language explainer
What are canonical tags?
A canonical tag tells search engines which version of a page is the main one when similar or duplicate versions exist.
The work to plan together
A scope shaped around this requirement.
- Use on duplicate or filtered URLsScope
- Point to an indexable pageReview
- Search engines treat it as a strongCheck
The useful starting point
A canonical identifies a preferred version among duplicate or very similar URLs. Search engines can select a different canonical when other signals disagree, so consistency matters.
What to review
- Use on duplicate or filtered URLs
- Point to an indexable page
- Search engines treat it as a strong hint
- Self-referencing canonicals are good practice
What to avoid or interpret carefully
Canonical tags are not a shortcut for merging unrelated pages. Redirect an obsolete URL where a permanent move is intended and appropriate.
Practical detail
Choose the right treatment for a duplicate URL
Suppose /product/blue-shirt/ is the useful product page and a tracking parameter produces the same content. The purpose of each URL determines the treatment.
| Part of the work | Example output | How to review it |
|---|---|---|
| Duplicate page still needed | Use a canonical pointing to the preferred equivalent page | Keep internal links and sitemap signals aligned. |
| Old page permanently replaced | Use an appropriate permanent redirect to the relevant replacement | The destination should satisfy the original purpose. |
| Page intentionally absent from search | Use a suitable noindex route where crawling can read it | This is an indexing decision, not a canonical shortcut. |
| Genuinely different variant content | Review whether it deserves its own page | Do not canonicalise distinct useful content automatically. |
For the duplicate example, the HTML can include <link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/product/blue-shirt/">. Inspect the URL and compare the declared and Google-selected canonical; selection is not guaranteed.

Align the preferred URL with the rest of the site
A canonical reference signals the preferred version among similar pages; it is not a command that replaces all other signals. Review the real duplicate set and the intended public URL before changing a template.
Find the variations
List the relevant URLs and compare their content and purpose. Tracking parameters, alternate paths and genuinely different pages need different decisions. Do not point unrelated pages to one destination.
Check consistency
Internal links and sitemap references should support the intended version where appropriate. Inspect redirects and the live canonical output. Conflicting signals make diagnosis harder.
Review the result
Use the available indexing evidence to see the selected version. A valid annotation does not guarantee that a platform will select it. Retain the before-and-after record and investigate remaining conflicts.
How to interpret this guidance
For example, two paths to the same service may be consolidated, while two services with different scope should remain distinct. The decision is about content equivalence and customer use, not merely reducing URL count.
Is a canonical tag a redirect?
No. A redirect sends a request to another destination; a canonical reference indicates a preferred version while the page may remain accessible. Choose the control that matches the actual purpose and review implementation with the developer.
Can we canonicalise all city pages to the homepage?
That would conflict with treating them as separate useful pages. First decide whether each page deserves a distinct purpose or should be consolidated.
