Plain-language explainer
What are Core Web Vitals?
Core Web Vitals are Google’s measures of loading (Largest Contentful Paint), responsiveness (Interaction to Next Paint) and visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift).
The work to plan together
A scope shaped around this requirement.
- Measured from real users in ChromeScope
- See them in Search Console and PageSpeedReview
- Good scores support user experienceCheck
The useful starting point
Core Web Vitals cover loading, interaction responsiveness and visual stability. Real-user measurements and simulated tests answer different questions, so compare them carefully rather than chasing a single score.
What to review
- Measured from real users in Chrome
- See them in Search Console and PageSpeed Insights
- Good scores support user experience
- Images, scripts and fonts are common causes
What to avoid or interpret carefully
Passing the metrics does not guarantee rankings or sales. Keep accessibility, content and working features in the review too.
Practical detail
Connect a metric to a page problem
Core Web Vitals currently cover loading through LCP, responsiveness through INP and visual stability through CLS. The practical question is which resource or interaction makes a real page difficult to use.
| Part of the work | Example output | How to review it |
|---|---|---|
| LCP: loading | A large first image delays the main visible content | Review that resource and repeat the same diagnostic conditions. |
| INP: responsiveness | A menu or form responds slowly while scripts run | Investigate the interaction and main-thread work rather than only compressing images. |
| CLS: stability | An image or late element moves the content | Reserve appropriate space and review the shifted element. |
| Field vs lab | Available real-user data vs a controlled diagnostic | Do not treat one lab score as the real-user distribution. |
A useful record names the URL, device context, tool, date, finding and change. Recheck the affected journey and available field evidence; a metric improvement is not automatically a ranking or conversion gain.

Read performance observations in their testing context
Core Web Vitals concern loading, responsiveness and visual stability. A result needs the page, device context and data source to be meaningful. A laboratory run and real-user observations can reveal different aspects of the experience.
Pick representative pages
Check the journeys people actually use, not only the homepage. Product templates, service pages and forms can have different assets and interactions.
Find the cause
Inspect the images, scripts, rendering and server behaviour behind a problem. Removing useful content simply to improve a score can worsen the customer task.
Compare consistently
Retest under comparable conditions and review available field information. Record the changed dependency. A score movement alone cannot establish a ranking or conversion effect.
How to interpret this guidance
Performance is part of a useful experience, alongside content and accessible interaction. Use it to prioritise confirmed bottlenecks rather than treating one score as a complete website quality grade.
Why can two speed tests produce different results?
Device, connection, cache state, test location and page behaviour can differ. Name the conditions and compare like-for-like runs. Real users also vary, so one laboratory result is not a promise about every visit.
Should every page get the same speed fix?
No. Shared template problems can affect many pages, but the important resource or interaction may differ by page type.
