Plain-language explainer
GEO vs SEO: what is the difference?
SEO aims to rank pages in search results; GEO aims to have a business correctly described and cited in AI-generated answers. GEO builds on SEO foundations rather than replacing them.
The work to plan together
A scope shaped around this requirement.
- Both need crawlable, useful pagesScope
- Clear answers and accurate business factsReview
- Measurement differsCheck
The useful starting point
SEO and GEO overlap in the work that makes useful information discoverable and understandable. They differ in the experience being observed: a conventional results page versus a generated answer. Keep the goals distinct while sharing sensible content and technical priorities.
What to review
- Both need crawlable, useful pages
- Clear answers and accurate business facts support useful source content
- Measurement differs: rankings vs AI mentions
- Most businesses need both
What to avoid or interpret carefully
Do not attribute every organic traffic change to AI features. Search Console combines Google AI-feature traffic within its Web reporting.
Practical detail
Share the useful work, separate the observations
For an illustrative software supplier, one clear service page can support ordinary search and provide facts that an AI answer may reference. No separate weighting formula is assumed.
| Part of the work | Example output | How to review it |
|---|---|---|
| SEO observation | Search query, page, country, clicks and enquiries | Review the website’s search and business journey. |
| AI observation | Prompt, platform, date, answer and linked sources | Separate a mention, a citation and an accurate description. |
| Shared action | Explain scope, prerequisites and evidence on the service page | Improve useful source information without promising a citation. |
GEO is an industry term for attention to generated-answer visibility. It is not evidence that Google applies a published, separate weighting system to “entity facts”.

Compare the experiences without duplicating the work
A useful page can support conventional search and provide source information for generated answers. That does not mean the two experiences have identical measurement. Keep shared content work in one plan while naming what each report observes.
Shared foundations
Clear service facts, accessible pages and useful internal routes benefit the website itself. Avoid commissioning two teams to rewrite the same page separately under SEO and GEO labels.
Different evidence
Organic query and page reports describe search observations. A defined assistant question set describes sampled answers. Neither should be relabelled as the other when a single dashboard combines them.
One priority record
A missing suitability section can be one content task with several reasons for doing it. Record the edit once, then review each outcome with its own limitations. This keeps reporting from double-counting activity.
How to interpret this guidance
Choose investment from the business need rather than the newest acronym. If the website cannot explain the core offer or complete an enquiry, that is a useful priority across discovery channels.
Should GEO replace our existing SEO plan?
Not automatically. Review the current search work and relevant AI-source questions together. Add a distinct observation method where useful, while retaining the technical, editorial and conversion tasks the website still needs.
Can a page improve without more AI mentions?
Yes. Better information may help website visitors and organic enquiries even when sampled AI answers vary.
