Plain-language explainer
What is hreflang?
hreflang tags tell search engines which language or country version of a page to show to which users.
The work to plan together
A scope shaped around this requirement.
- Use for suitable maintained language or regional alternativesScope
- Each version must link to all othersReview
- Include an x-default where usefulCheck
The useful starting point
hreflang connects genuine alternate language or regional pages. The URLs must be accessible and the relationships reciprocal. It does not replace localisation or guarantee which version ranks.
What to review
- Use for suitable maintained language or regional alternatives
- Each version must link to all others
- Include an x-default where useful
- Errors are common: test them
What to avoid or interpret carefully
Do not generate country pages only to add hreflang. Each version needs a useful reason to exist and suitable audience information.
Practical detail
Describe genuine language or regional alternatives
An English UK page and an English US page may be alternatives when the business maintains distinct market content. Simply accepting international enquiries does not mean every page requires hreflang.
| Part of the work | Example output | How to review it |
|---|---|---|
| UK alternative | en-GB → https://example.com/uk/service/ | Use the actual UK page, with appropriate self and return references. |
| US alternative | en-US → https://example.com/us/service/ | Keep the alternate set consistent on both versions. |
| Canonical alignment | Each intended indexable regional version has a suitable canonical | Do not point all distinct versions at one page while expecting them all to serve separately. |
| Fallback | x-default where an appropriate unmatched-language destination exists | The fallback should serve a real purpose. |
For the UK reference, a link can use rel="alternate" hreflang="en-GB" href="https://example.com/uk/service/". Review return links and actual URL responses; a country-name heading alone is not a regional alternative strategy.

Describe maintained alternatives accurately
Hreflang is relevant when a site has suitable language or regional alternatives. It should reflect actual maintained versions, not a list of countries the business hopes to target. Start with the content and market structure.
Identify alternatives
Compare the pages and their intended audiences. A language translation and a regional offer are different choices. Confirm that each version is useful and supported.
Review implementation
Have the developer check the references, supported codes and relationship between alternatives against official guidance. Internal links and canonical decisions should not undermine the intended setup.
Keep content current
Assign ownership for changes across versions. An annotation cannot repair stale pricing, inaccurate coverage or an unreviewed translation. Publish only what the business can maintain.
How to interpret this guidance
One clear international page may be more useful than many weak alternatives. Choose the architecture from genuine audience needs and resources rather than a desire to claim local presence everywhere.
Does hreflang create a local office or local credibility?
No. It describes page alternatives. Actual presence, service availability and market claims must be accurate in the content. Technical annotations should never be used to imply facts the business cannot substantiate.
Do India, UK and US contact options always need separate pages?
No. Separate pages should help their audiences with genuine differences. Use hreflang when suitable maintained alternatives exist.
